About a sad event a few years ago.

I wrote this a while back.

My son had found and brought up some stray puppies.
One little female in particular had bad health. He looked after her but later she died of a generalized infection.
He was very shaken.

The day after she died he found another little brown dog which was in very bad shape.

He still has her.

This is what I thought at that time.

"A special thought for Doggy Dog and Whiny.

I do hope they are enjoying life. It can’t have been very joyous around Mohamed Drive recently. I wonder if they feel something in the atmosphere. Who can tell?
Sharmeen said that Twiggy used to sleep on her head when she was miserable in bed.
How can we know just how much dogs feel? I wouldn’t say they understand, but feel of course. They grieve when they lose their owner, but do they sense our feelings? Do they read our body language and interpret the tone of our voices? They know when we speak to them but does our own talk or lack of it affect them, however intelligent they are?
We can’t get into their head, even less than into another human’s head.

Back to Little Brown Doggy.

If this little creature was treated badly, perhaps by children, she will remember. It would be wise to be very wary with her and in her presence once she is better. No sudden gestures. Dogs can bite if they feel in danger because of a memory. Children shouldn’t play with her as they can be rough, even unintentionally.
Maybe this warning is unnecessary but I think about it. She may be quiet because she is cowed by fear. I haven’t seen her so I can’t know. I don’t know if I could tell. It is just a hypothesis and Sharmeen thought the same thing. Little Vichy goes around with her ears back and acts in a submissive way because of Twiggy’s authority over her but when she can, because she is feeling excited, she attacks Twiggy to try her luck.
We are another dog to dogs aren’t we? Ah well. No real problem, just food for thought. Good luck to them all."

He now has five dogs and nine cats. I've mentioned it before I know. :)

Quite a fur family he has.. Yes, fur children sense our feelings through body language and tone of voice.. They also live in the now.. They can remember, but are much more able to set aside cruelty from the past when given a good life..

I have very little experience of dogs, as I am a cat person, but I remember a boxer, a fine and powerful-looking creature belonging to my god-mother, but the kind that are born with floppy ears, and must be operated as puppies to have their ears cut in points. It is certainly painful, and the puppy left the veterinarian's ofice with its small mangled ears swathed in lengths of surgical gauze and patches. It then was left by itself in the car as my god-mother went to do some shopping. Some kids came by, and found this puppy with its enornous patched-up ears, funny, and an easy target since it obviously couldn't get at them. They spent I don't know how much time maddening and mocking the suffering puppy. My god-mother chased them away as she came back, and Tonnerre ('Thunder';) grew up to be a beautiful and impressive boxer. It never forgot that experience, though, and remained aggressive toward strangers, and frankly threatening when a child was around.
A pity. It might have grown up to become a sweet guy... :rose:

Boxers are supposed to be friendly dogs.

I knew one as a child that came to greet us children at its garden gate and slobbered all over our caressing hands.

Poor Tonnerre.

Of course many children are cruel.
I once stopped a small boy from drowning a kitten for the fun. Grrr!

That's reassuring, Ann.

This little dog is sweet I am told.
She walks on three legs having lost the use of one.

She certainly loves my son.

He put up a memorial in his garden to the first female who died. He is an absolute atheist but he got sort of mystical feelings from the emotion.

These other two males called Doggy Dog and Whiny,( because he is dominated by the other), were not socialized properly and are very frightened of people. It's a shame. My son had too much to do with their sister who almost died of infection and weakness as a tiny puppy when he found them.

He has no children so you can guess that these animals are replacements for his affection.
One or other of them is always falling ill.
One of his cats has an ulcer on an eye at the moment.

I have 4 terriers and I believe they know what you are saying...if Daisy hears you say go bye-bye she literally gets so excited she wets herself! If Hooter hears you say let's go for a walk , he runs you over to get to the door. If you tell Karma to get her ball, she runs frantically to find it. And Macy will howl when you tell her too. They all know what you say, when we tell them it's bedtime, they beat us to bed! An Karma gets her feelings hurt easily. Just thought I would share that with you:D

Thanks.
Yes, I agree about them understanding words and actions. Like packing your bags! My son has two tiny long-haired chihuahuas and they understand such a lot.
When he gets ready to leave the house they get into their little bags as near to the front door as possible. :)
